Festival Owl Project

The First Owl Project

As a way of supporting the Festival Gallery Collection, Festival Director Dr. David E. White asked 35 children’s book illustrators in April of 1997 if they would each create an owl, the Keene State College mascot. Any money raised from selling these images would be used to purchase and frame original art for the gallery.

After we received the first 28 owls, we used them to create a poster that we sell in our Festival Shop. In 2003, we received another 32 owls, which we used in a second poster, also available in our Festival Shop.

Dr. White set a goal of acquiring at least 100 owls in celebration of Keene State College’s 2009 centennial year. Artist Michael Dooling created and donated the 100th owl; he was recognized and gave a special presentation in the Festival Gallery on October 25, 2008.

The Festival now has 109 owls and extends its deepest appreciation for all its wonderful friends who have so generously given of their enchanting talents to support its work. But we’re not done yet - we’d be delighted to accept other owls from published children’s book illustrators who’d like to join in our celebration!

Like to Donate an Owl?

We’re looking for owl illustrations - from published children’s book illustrators - that have been created especially for this project and have not been published previously or used as a logo.

If you donate, not only will your name appear on our donor list on this web page, you will also receive a free registration and luncheon at the Children’s Literature Festival here at Keene State College for the year in which you make the donation.

When you receive your flyer in August before the Festival, simply fill out the form and write “Owl Donor” in the “total cost” line. It would be wonderful to have you at the Festival and to introduce you to our audience of approximately 400 to 500 registrants from around the United States and Canada!

Thanks so much for donating an owl! It can be any size and medium. When completed, please send it to:
