Find an Internship
Internships at Keene State vary depending on your department: some are part of coursework, others are independent. Internships can be for-credit, not-for-credit, paid, or unpaid.
- Contact your advisor, a faculty member in your program, Career Services about possible internships and learn what businesses are looking for in employees and interns.
- Look up internship opportunities on Handshake. While these are often not credit-bearing internships, sometimes credit can be arranged.
- Check out the job and internship search strategies and resources on the KSC Career Advising webpages.
- When registering for classes, look for courses that include an internship or practical experience in their description.
Prepare for the Internship
For most internships, the application process is very similar to applying for a job. For departments that assign internships as part of a course, meet with the faculty instructor for that course.
- Prepare and revise your resume and cover letter.
- Prepare for the interview.
- If you choose to do a career-building internship that doesn’t involve credits, you will coordinate directly with the employer to set up the internship. Faculty approval is only required for credit-bearing internships.
- Remember that summer internship course tuition is charged per credit through KSC Continuing Education.
Get Credit for your Internship
Academic internships (for credit) require prior faculty approval and must be reported through Handshake, but first…
- Make sure the internship site and supervisor are willing to work with KSC on granting credit for the internship
- If you do not already have a faculty member sponsoring your internship, find out from your department or Kristin Brooks, Internship Coordinator if there is someone in your major who works with internships.
- Work with your faculty sponsor to determine how many hours and credits you can reasonably fit into your schedule. Internships are a minimum of 35 hours per credit but vary by department.
- Discuss internship objectives and evaluation plans with your faculty sponsor.
- Report your academic credit internship in Handshake for official course registration. Directions to Register Internships (Experiences) in Handshake.
