Maria Franciosa ‘15

Maria Franciosa

By undertaking a double major in music education and elementary education, Maria Franciosa is opening up a couple of career options. She wants to be qualified to work both as a music teacher and an elementary school classroom teacher. At Keene State, she’s had opportunities to try her hand at both.

"My freshman year I got to work with the Keene Elementary Band, which introduced me to a lot of the fourth and fifth-grade students,” she says, "and then this year, working with the Math Beyond the Dots program through the Elementary Ed Department, I ended up seeing a lot of those kids again in a math setting.

"There’s quite a bit of overlap between math and music - not only in basic time signatures, for instance, but you notice that the kids who excel in math tend to excel in music as well, because it’s the way their brains work.”
