Dr. Richard Lebeaux

Richard Lebeaux is Professor of English and American Studies and (from 1998 to 2007) Coordinator of the American Studies Program. He has been at Keene State since 1985. He grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts and received his A.B. from Middlebury College in 1968, an M.A.T. in English from Harvard in 1970, and his Ph.D. in American and New England Studies from Boston University in 1975. Prior to Keene State he taught in the Department of American Thought and Language at Michigan State from 1976 to 1985, and in 1975-76 he taught American Civilization and English at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park. Professor Lebeaux is the author of two books, Young Man Thoreau (1977) and Thoreau's Seasons (1984), both published by the University of Massachusetts Press. He has also written several articles and essays, and presented numerous papers on, Thoreau, Emerson, Whitman, psychobiography, pedagogy, Phil Ochs, and Fred Small. At Keene State he has taught, in addition to English 101, a wide range of courses in 19th century American literature and l9th and 20th century American Studies, including introductory American Studies courses on the l930s and 1960s; popular culture; the folk music revival; Phil Ochs; folk, rock, and American culture; 20th cedntury Jewish American and culture; surveys of l9th century American literature; Transcendentalism; 19th century American fiction; and seminars on Thoreau and on Hawthorne, Melville, and Dickinson.
