Support for New Faculty

Our programs to orient and support new tenure-track, clinical, artist-in-residence, post-doc, contract, and adjunct faculty are one of the signature services that Faculty Enrichment provides.

Orientation for new Tenure-Track, Clinical, Artist-in-Residence, Post-Doc, and Contract Faculty

This annual orientation occurs in mid-August two weeks before the fall semester begins and is held over two full days. The specific dates, times, and locations of the orientation will be on the Faculty Enrichment events calendar.

The Coordinator of Faculty Enrichment leads this orientation and invites other current faculty, administrators, staff, and students to engage in discussion with the new faculty. Sample discussion topics and activities include institutional data about Keene State College students, disability services, academic technology, grant writing and undergraduate research, the teacher-scholar model, KSC Cares and other wellness support for students, tour of campus and the Mason Library, Title IX and harassment workshop, breakfast with principal administrators, lunch with peer faculty mentors, and meeting with the KSCEA union. This is also an opportunity for new tenure-track, clinical, artist-in-residence, post-doc, and contract faculty to get to know each other and assist one another.

Additional support for this cohort is provided by the New Faculty Learning Community and the Peer Mentoring Program (see below).

Orientation for new Adjunct Faculty

This orientation for new adjunct faculty occurs twice a year, one to two weeks before the beginning of both the fall and spring semesters. Two orientation sessions are offered each semester, one in the morning and one in the early evening on two different days of the week. The specific dates, times, and locations of the orientation will be on the Faculty Enrichment events calendar.

At this orientation, the Coordinator of Faculty Enrichment introduces adjuncts to the student culture at Keene State College with institutional data and connects adjuncts to campus-wide faculty enrichment opportunities and student support services. This is also an opportunity for new adjunct faculty to get to know each other and assist one another.

New Faculty Learning Community

The New Faculty Learning Community is an intensive year-long cohort-based faculty learning community that provides ongoing support for each cohort of new tenure-track, clinical, artist-in-residence, post-doc, and contract faculty and addresses the specific needs of faculty who are in the first year of their jobs at Keene State College. The discussion topics and activities of the New Faculty Learning Community are shaped by the participants but, at least initially, they are facilitated by the Coordinator of Faculty Enrichment and other invited speakers. The New Faculty Learning Community gathers every three weeks for events such as a panel with new assistant professors from the previous year, tips for the first-year performance evaluation, best practices for advising and mentoring students, attending to the well-being of faculty themselves, inspiration from winners of the college’s Distinguished Teacher Award, teaching with academic technology or high-impact pedagogy, and issues of diversity and inclusion on campus.

Peer Mentoring Program

New faculty have the opportunity to participate in the faculty mentoring program. We pair new faculty with seasoned faculty using best practices of faculty mentoring. The mentors and mentees gather for the first time in person for a luncheon and mentoring workshop during new faculty orientation, meet one-on-one throughout the academic year, and are invited to participate in special social gatherings off-campus and other mentoring workshops. This program is topic-and-cohort based since it addresses the specific needs of new faculty and their mentors. The discussion topics and activities are shaped by the participants and facilitated by the Coordinator of Faculty Enrichment.

Calendars of events and trainings

New faculty are encouraged to regularly consult Keene State College calendars for upcoming Faculty Enrichment opportunities and other Events offered across campus. The Office of Human Resources also lists faculty/staff trainings (e.g. Title IX and Harassment Workshop for Faculty) that require an employee log-in to enroll.
