Upward Bound Students

Academic Year Program

Students meet regularly with an educational counselor who supports them with academic classes, tutoring services, financial literacy, goal setting, and college and career exploration. The educational counselor provides general support and advocacy for every student. Furthermore, the following targeted technical assistance is provided to juniors and seniors: career interest, college searches and admissions criteria, financial aid, scholarships, fee waivers for eligible students, and test preparation.

Tutoring

To ensure students receive both remediation and enrichment in key subject areas, bi-monthly Saturday tutoring sessions are held from October through May. Content area tutors (English, math, and science) are trained to improve essential skills, address questions about course content, organize a study plan, and build confidence. Sessions are held in a large campus computer lab, providing students access to computers, internet, open educational resources, printers and school supplies.

STEM Exposure Activities

After tutoring sessions, time is allotted for UBMS students to engage in activities that expose students to engaging areas of study within the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math. These activities include mentor-ship with KSC students & alumni and cooperative learning activities with KSC faculty, as well as industry experiences such as facility tours and career speakers.

Workshops

Workshops held during the school year are designed to help students with the following:

  • PSAT and SAT preparation
  • study skills
  • time management
  • college research
  • college applications
  • financial aid

Regular parent workshops are held to provide technical assistance and support. Cultural events are also planned throughout the year.

College Visits

Throughout the academic year, students are invited to join organized visits to many New England colleges and universities. Students go on campus tours and interview with admissions representatives. College visits also provide students an opportunity to view campus facilities, eat in dining halls, and speak with college students and faculty.
