Theory and Practice- the Essay

A course in the theory and practice of writing nonfiction, withan emphasis on the art of the essay-to include the personalessay, literary journalism, the review, critical commentary, andthe public humanities. We will consider the history of the essayas a literary genre, consider theories of the essay, and reflecton our experiences writing expository, descriptive, narrative,personal, and creative nonfiction in school. Expect intensivepractice writing for public audiences, including nonfictioncommentaries on literary artifacts-as well as forms of essaywriting using creative adaptation of the form using sound,image, and visual design.Prereq : ITW 101 and one 200-level and one 300-level Englishcourse. !2 credits completed towards the writing option or theWriting Minor
