19 Cent English Literature

In this course we will study four novels of profound and lastinginterest from the British nineteenth century. Beginning withCharlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre (1847) we will follow the novel'sability to focus on the growth of the modern individual whileengaging with themes of gender, ecology, colonialism, wealth,art, industry, and education. We will follow these themes inDickens's David Copperfield (1850), George Eliot's Middlemarch(1872) and Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890). DrStroup Prereq: ITW 101 and one 200-level English course
