Religion and Popular Culture

Introduces students to skills and ways of thinking essential to intellectual inquiry. Students will pose a creative and complex question; investigate it with critical analyses of reading, research, and data; and use appropriate research techniques and documentation to produce a substantial writing project.

Comments: What do CrossFit, Britney Spears, and Netflix binges have incommon? They're all sites of religious activity in Americanpopular culture! Popular culture-which encompasses everythingfrom the clothes you wear to the music you listen to, to theshows and movies you watch and beyond-contains, promotes,criticizes, and even creates religion. This course explores theinteraction between popular culture and religion in Americansport, celebrity culture, visual media, art, music, and more.
