Screening Medicine

We will explore the ethical quandaries, stereotypes, andinequalities seen in films and television programs aboutmedicine, medical personnel, hospitals and treatments. Illness,addiction, caregiving, childbirth: we will critically exploreworks like: Elephant Man, The Business of Being Born, Miss Evers'Boys, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Sicko, Miele/Honey,Requiem for a Dream, To The Bone and The Father. How doespopular culture portray the challenges faced by doctors andnurses? How do these works shape the way we look at andunderstand medical conditions? Work for the class includesweekly in-class film analysis, a discussion board, and astudent-selected research project/case study.
