Middle Ages,medievalist&other

For centuries, medievalists have argued that race did not existin the Middle Ages and that the term-and all of its pejorativeconnotations-only emerged in the Early Modern period. Recently, however, this view has come to be questioned by scholars. In thisseminar, we will read and discuss recent scholarship on thesubject before turning to a discussion and analysis of aselection of medieval works dealing with the interaction betweenChristians and non-Christians. Throughout the semester, we willreturn to the same question: Did medieval Europeans approachnon-Christians through the lens of race or did they understanddifference in a way completely different from our own?
