Memoir/Personal Narrative

Brene Brown says: When we deny our stories, they define us. Whenwe own our stories, we get to write the ending. This course willexplore how to own past experiences-to have agency over ourlives-and to write compelling narratives based on thoseexperiences using memory and imagination. Writing amemoir/personal narrative is at its core an emotional experiment.Unlike other modes of writing, memoir demands a kind of honestythat cannot be faked or manufactured. We will learn how mutablememory is, and how to use that very mutability to help tell ourstory. We will read widely, excerpts as well as full-lengthmemoir, like Mary Karr's Liar's Club and the graphic memoirStitches. We will write frequently, creating a narrative by usingthe "mosaic" method-drafting moments of experience quickly, theneventually looking among those drafts for patterns and themes, and finally creating a shape that vividly reveals a portion ofyour life. If you don't write your story, who will?
