The Avant Gardes and Beyond

X-Listed with IAART-391-01 Open to film and art majors (and others with permission ofinstructor), this course explores the intersections of film andart, examining moving images in the avant-garde movements of the1920s (Constructivism, Surrealism and Dadaism); the 1960sAmerican and British avant-gardes; and in contemporary movingimage and video installation exhibited in the art world. We willread artist manifestos and critical essays on experimental film;screen work on film and on video; and organize one artistscreening. A creative project can substitute for one paper. 3Thursday evening screenings will be required over the semester. This course fulfills the IA Global Perspectives requirement forArt majors.
