This article has some statistics about plagiarism in High School and College students. Also contains reports on Internet plagiarism. Bigna, Shirley, Marshall Smith, and Robert Vernon. "Plagiarism and the Web." Journal of Social Work Education 37.1 (2001): 193. This article provides suggestions to teachers for preventing and detecting plagiarism. Also, where to look [web resources, books, etc..] to investigate a case of plagiarism. It has a long list of web sites and book resources. Macdonald, Ronald. Discusses the issue of plagiarism in schools, why students shouldn't be punished for plagiarizing, advice to teachers about plagiarism prevention and research findings about plagiarism from Sheffiled University. Trotter, Andrew. "Educators Turn to Anti-plagiarism Web Programs to Detect Cheating." Education Week. 20.15 (December 2000): 14. Provides information on web sites, which help teachers catch students plagiarizing. There are programs, which teachers may use that will compare their students papers against a database of existing papers. Also, discusses plagiarism among student achievers. Utley, Alison. "Tool to Catch Net Copycats." Times Higher Education Supplement. 1462. (November 2000): 15. Discusses a software developed by iparadigms, which a University is planning to use to help prevent plagiarism. Here are some web sites your students might be using: www.genius.com- the access fee for one year is $9.95 (this site is for students). It is a database of many different types of papers, book reviews, essays, term papers. It is very highly rated. You can see a sample of the papers they offer before joining. To earn money students can put a link to another web site on this one and receive 15% of the profits from genius papers. www.academon.com- on this site students can publish their papers and also purchase other students papers. You can get papers in almost any subject area from art to women's studies. (There is a disclaimer under "Ethics") Students who submit their papers to the site are eligible for a cash reward. www.coastal.edu- this site provides links to student papers and presentations. www.realpapers.com- for $19.85 the researchers who run this site will write papers for students. The student needs to provide the information to customize the paper, or rather have it customized. |
