Headers and Footers

KSC currently uses a complicated, yet efficient system of headers and footers to implement site-wide design standards. The current system includes at least one header and footer for each sub site, which adds up to about 200 files. This is much easier to manage that the former system where the design was implemented on each of our 6000 web pages. However, we are in the process of implementing a new system that will allows us to implement the site design with one header and one footer.

At this stage, page editors will find that their site uses one of the following two methods for employing the header and footer.

Sub Site Header
If your site uses a sub site header, there will be a <cfinclude template="..."> tag at the top and bottom of each page in your site.

Global Header
If your site uses the global header, there will be a file named application.cfm and a file named onrequestend.cfm in your folder. The application.cfm file will have a <cfmodule template="..."> tag in it and the onrequestend.cfm file will have a <cfinclude template="..."> tag in it. It is important that these two files are not modified or deleted.

The global header method is far more efficient and less prone to errors than the sub site method, which is why we are in the process of making all sites use the global header and footer. If you have any questions, please e-mail me at webmaster@keene.edu
