Michael Grotton ’09 and Irissa Plouff ’08 played crucial roles in the biodiesel team and presented their work in the creation of a community partnership for a closed loop biodiesel system at the 2008 KSC Academic Excellence Conference. The team traveled to Washington, D.C., where they won honorable mention in the national P3 sustainability competition sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency.

  • Academic Excellence Conference: My independent study project about Bio Diesel was an absolutley great experience. I would suggest a special project to anyone who is up for the challenge. It definitely requires a lot of hard work and dedication, but it is awesome to look back and see how much work you have completed and how much you can accomplish in a semester.
Irissa Mary Plouff

  • I recommend KSC because: I would recommend Keene State to a friend based on all of the great people and the exceptional education I’ve had.
  
My application essay was about: Why school was right for me this time around. Nontraditional students often take an unusual path.
Matthew Cutts
  • Hometown: Windsor, Vt.
  • What I like about my major: Athletic training challenges you to perpetually develop your own techniques based on new and old research.
  • Mentors:: I wouldn’t have the love for athletic training that I do now were it not for the entire AT staff.
  • Activities: Cofounder and first president of the Keene State Athletic Training Society (KSATS), co-vice president of Physical Education honors society (PEK), nontraditional representative of student government
  • Scholarship recipient: Keene State’s generosity has made coming to school for me possible.
  • Internship: I served in the New England Patriots internship program. I was also on the sidelines for the playoffs.
  • Career goals: I plan to work in the NFL.

I'm proudest of: How I am currently doing in my classes here at KSC. At first I was really unsure of how things in college would be compared to high school. Even though the transition was tough at times, I am really proud of how I handled it and that my grades haven't suffered through some of my harder times.

  • Activities: I was the intramural softball team captain, and I work out at BodyWorks four times a week.
  • Things I do with my friends: I attend sporting events, walk around town, watch movies, and go outside whenever possible.

  • Campus job: I work at both the College Relations Office and the IT HelpDesk.
  • I picked KSC because: There is plenty to get involved in, and I really wanted to become part of the community.
  
KSC has changed me in this way: It made me realize how making new friends changes your life.
Jared K. Pierce
  • Hometown: Atkinson, N.H.
  • What I like about my major: I will be able to help children in the future.
  • Activities: Band, Holocaust and Genocide Awareness Club, and History Club.
  • Things I do with my friends: Hang out, watch movies, listen to music, walk Main Street

  • I picked KSC because: It has a good reputation in the education field and a wonderful campus community.
  • I recommend KSC because: The campus community is the best I saw out of all the colleges I went to visit. And the College interacts well with the city of Keene.
  
Chepina Witkowski '05
Chepina majored in Mathematics and Elementary Education. She excelled and became the 2005 Athletic Scholar of the Year. After teaching and coaching for two years, she went on to Illinois State University and will earn her masters in mathematics this summer, and begin her Ph.D. program there in the fall.

I picked KSC because: Being at Keene State is like being home. It's beautiful, and the people are some of the best you will ever meet.
Amanda Shakar
  • Hometown: Bennington, Vt.
  • Like about major: I have always loved studying psychology and the social sciences. I became interested in exploring management here at Keene State.
  • Mentor: All my teachers have been great, especially my biology teacher, Dr. Strong, and my sociology teacher, Dr. Corette.
  • Activities: Mentors in Violence Protection and KSC PRIDE
  • Things I do with my friends: I love walking the town of Keene; it's absolutely beautiful. I also enjoy dancing, singing, and photography.
  • Favorite book: Persepolis; I've been reading everything by the author I can get my hands on.
  • Favorite film: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
  • Favorite music: James Taylor, State Radio
  • I'm proudest of: Becoming the person I am today; I love myself and surround myself with people I love and who love me. I think a lot of people have a hard time doing that in today's world.
  • What I'd like to do with my major: I'm interested in mentoring, social work, administrative work for a psychiatric hospital, and clinical counseling.
  • KSC has changed me in this way: Keene State has allowed me to fully develop and adjust to my surroundings.
