Keene State classes are taught by professors, not graduate students. The faculty is distinguished not only by their scholarship, but also by their teaching skills and their willingness to help each student succeed.
The College's relatively small size and its tradition of close-knit community encourages students to develop meaningful alliances with professors in pursuing creative and critical scholarship and professional development.
Every discipline has a success story. Here are just a few of them.
-
In spring of 2007, journalism students won the Journalists' Mark of Excellence Award in in-depth reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists for their 24-page publication Justice in New Hampshire, a 15-year retrospective of the Pamela Smart murder trial. Journalism students spent 14 months studying the high-profile 1991 crime. They searched records, conducted interviews, tracked down defendants, and filed 60 Freedom of Information requests for more information. Their report was published in the KSC student newspaper, The Equinox, in 2006.

Three Keene State chemistry students worked with Professor Colin Abernethy in 2006 on a research project funded by a $39,486 Cottrell College Science Award. The students prepared a new type of vanadium nitride compound and presented their results at the Northeast regional meeting of the American Chemical Society.

Working on short notice, students from product design, architecture, and management classes and the Small Business Institute designed and developed displays for 2007's first-ever New Hampshire Entrepreneurship Week, which showcased innovative ideas and practices. Students, recent alumni, and professors worked together to create the projects.
The spring Academic Excellence Conference, open to the public and always well-attended, is a shining event in the school's intellectual life. Working closely with faculty members, students present original scholarship in the form of papers, posters, workshops, panel discussions, and performances. Topics in 2008 ranged across the curriculum:
- French: "Reflections on French Romantic Society: Feminists, Bohemians, Poets, and Painters"
- Education: "Character Education: Civic Education"
- Safety Studies and Architecture: "Safe and Sustainable Design of a Biodiesel Production and Laboratory Facility in Keene, New Hampshire"
- Biology: "Evolution of the Apetalous Passionflower"
- Economics: "A Marxian Look into the Socioeconomic Development of Imperial China"
- Geography: "Conservation in New Hampshire:A Trust in the Land"
- Sociology: "From Ideas to Reality: Developing Local Programs that Work"
As an intellectual community, the College also shares in the Keene Is Reading! program, the annual Children's Literature Festival, a biennial symposium on world affairs, and numerous lectures, concerts, and other events that fill the academic year and bring contemporary thinkers, artists, and performers onto campus.
