The Heart of New England
Keene has been named one of "America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations" by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Nestled in the Ashuelot River valley and bordered by low hills, the city looks east toward Mount Monadnock, the defining geographical feature of the region. Originally settled around 1740, Keene has a population today of 23,000.

Keene State College is located on Main Street, just a few minutes by foot from Keene's lively downtown, with its shops, offices, restaurants, and historic square at the head of Main Street.

Keene is located:

  • 1 hour from Concord, N.H.
  • 2 hours from Hartford, Conn., or Boston, Mass.
  • 2 ½ hours from Albany, N.Y.
  • 3 hours from Portland, Maine, or Burlington, Vt.
  • 4 hours from New York City, or Montreal

We’re not in a large metropolitan area, but Keene has movies, restaurants, good shopping, and a great sense of community – and it sits in one of the most beautiful spots in New England.
