Science Center Construction Update
Saving Trees and Recycling Rubble
On Monday, May 19, workers began gutting the Science Center, disposing of asbestos and removing fittings. Salvage crews took many items, such as doors, shelves, and benches, for resale. Work began on dismantling the elderly air conditioning system. An eight-feet high wire fence encircled the Science Center construction site, which includes a portion of Appian Way, the lawn adjacent to the Student Center, and the parking lot behind the Science Center.
Meanwhile, on Appian Way, members of Keene State's grounds crew frantically saved as many as possible of the locust trees that grow within the construction zone. Using a generator-powered tree spade, Jeff Garland, Bud Winsor, Adam Robinson and Chris Fiker dug around the trees and carefully lifted them, roots and all, onto a trailer. About a dozen trees, up to 25 feet tall, were removed and replanted near Tisdall family housing and the Holloway Hall lot.
