Recycling, Reuse, and Waste Report

Move-In Recycling and Reuse 2003

  • 5 tons of cardboard were collected on Campus during the week after Move In.
New incoming students generated 2 tons on the first day alone!
  • 17 tons of Trash were collected during the same time period

In comparison, on an average week KSC collects:

  • 1 ton of cardboard
  • 10 tons of trash

Each ton of cardboard recycled on campus saves us $100 in disposal fees

In addition, at Move-In R.O.C.K.S. gave away the following items, collected during Move-Out:

  • Over 80 area rugs. Cleaned over the summer and put in the lobbies of several residence halls, free for the taking.
  • hundreds of coat hangers
  • 50 small, cleaned, trash containers
  • Dozens of three-ring binders, notebooks and other office supplies, organized in the Re-Use room in Elliot Hall and publicized through signs put up on campus.

Science Center Renovations

Keene State College saw an opportunity to Recycle Construction and Demolition Materials during the Science Center Renovations. Gilbane Construction was a willing partner in working towards our goal of being good stewards of our environment. As a result we saved $10,000 in disposal fees! .

Savings as of August 19, 2003

  • Masonry /Concrete: 40 Dumpsters @ 5 tons each = 200 tons; cost savings are $100 x 40 = $4,000
  • Metal: 24 Dumpsters @ 5 tons each = 120 tons; cost savings are $250 x 24 = $6,000

That's 320 tons of materials removed for reuse instead of disposal!

Keene State also made a concerted effort to recycle paper from office and classroom clean-outs. We estimate that we recycled 6 tons of paper.

Keene State College's Surplus Program worked diligently to recycle a variety of chalkboards, desks, lab tables, bathroom stalls and fixtures and many other items. These items went to new homes in several area schools, some materials went as far away as Honduras AND we saved hundreds of dollars in disposal costs.

With limited storage on campus, we were able to negotiate a rental space from the City of Keene in their new facility on Marlboro Street. As a result, we were able to safely store hundreds of items for the newly redone science center. We saved money and we helped the City use their space productively while they decided how to best use the space in the future.
