Housing Deposit & Selection
Frequently Asked Questions

Q.
Will my deposit be refunded if I decide to live off campus?

A.
President Giles-Gee has authorized Student Financial Services to issue fall 2008 housing deposit refunds to 150 students. If more than 150 requests are received, priority for the refund will be given to juniors and seniors and then to sophomores. Any student who wants to request a refund must complete and submit an online Housing Release Request form by no later than 5:00 p.m. on April 11.

Q.
Under what conditions will I get my deposit back?

A.
The deposit will be refunded if we are not able to provide housing during the room selection process.

If you decide to transfer, the deposit will be refunded if 1) you complete the online Housing Release Request form by no later than 3/31/08, and 2) you notify the Student Development Office in Elliot Hall of your intention to transfer.

Q.
Can I give my lottery number to someone else?

A.
Lottery numbers are not transferrable for any reason.

Q.
How are the lottery numbers assigned?

A.
Lottery numbers were generated according to credits earned and class standing. We started with the number of credits earned to date and added the number of credits you are enrolled in for spring. The KSC Catalog defines class standing according to the following:

Credits
0-29 Freshman
30-59 Sophomore
60-89 Junior
90+ Senior

Due to the expected shortfall of upper-class beds, the decision was made to combine the junior and senior classes for the purpose of lottery number generation. This ensures that the potential for being waitlisted is shared among juniors and seniors - rather than juniors making up the bulk of the waitlist.

Q.
I'm a Junior/Senior and want to live with a sophomore - is that possible?

A.
No. If we allowed sophomores to pick rooms in junior/senior areas, it would reduce the number of spaces reserved for juniors and seniors. Likewise, if juniors and seniors selected rooms in the freshman/sophomore areas, we would face the risk of running out of available spaces for freshmen and sophomore students.

Only students currently living on campus are eligible to apply for housing for the 2008-2009 academic year.

Q.
I am a first year student – am I supposed to participate in this event or will housing be assigned to me like it was when I came in the fall?

A.
If you want to apply for housing for the 2008 – 2009 academic year, you must participate in the housing deposit event the week of March 3rd.

Q.
My friend is coming to KSC in the fall as a first year/transfer student and we want to live together. Is that possible?

A.
Only current on-campus students are eligible to participate in the housing deposit and selection events -- spaces cannot be held for Fall 2008 incoming students.

A non-refundable $300 housing deposit must be paid exclusively via our online process from March 3, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. through March 6, 2008 at 4:00 p.m.

Q.
Why must I pay my housing deposit via the online process?

A.
When you pay your housing deposit through the online form, you will also be consenting to the Terms and Conditions of the Housing Contract. This is how we are able to distinguish your housing deposit from general payments made to your student account.

Q.
Can I pay in cash since I don't have a credit card or a checking account?

A.
Cash payments will not be accepted. All payments must be made online with either credit card or e-check.

Q.
As a returning student, am I guaranteed housing if I pay the online housing deposit during the event timeline?

A.
Returning students who are financially cleared by February 27, 2008, paid their housing deposit between March 3rd and March 6th, 2008, and are registered for 12 credits by April 11, 2008 will be eligible for on-campus housing on a space available basis.

Students who missed the deposit deadline, but would still like to live on campus, can submit a Housing Waitlist Application Form.

Q.
If I complete the Housing Waitlist Application Form, will I be able to live with my friends for the fall 2008 semester?

A.
Housing will not be guaranteed to any waitlisted student. If we are in a position to offer housing, we cannot guarantee that you will be able to live in the same room or building as your friends.

Q.
If I do miss the deposit event, when will you be able to tell me if I will be able to live on campus in the fall?

A.
If you complete a Housing Waitlist Application Form, we will contact you via your mailcruiser account regarding potential housing availability no later than May 16, 2008. Although we realize you will be anxious to know about housing availability, we will not have the information required to accurately respond to your questions before that time.

A student must have no outstanding charges by February 27, 2008 to place a housing deposit the week of March 3, 2008.

Q.
I'm working out the financing but don't think I will be cleared by the deposit deadline. Can I participate in the deposit event since I know my financing will come through at some point?

A.
Residential Life cannot make the decision to allow a financially ineligible student to participate in the deposit event. Please contact the Student Financial Services Office in Elliot Hall - if an exception is made, it can only be made by that office.

Students must be registered for a minimum of 12 credits for the fall 2008 semester by April 11, 2008 to participate in the housing selection process.

Q.
I planned on picking up a class during add/drop (Schedule Adjustment Period) when I return in the fall which is why I didn't register for the full 12 credits. Is that okay?

A.
If you are not registered for a minimum of 12 credits by the end of the registration period, April 11, 2008, you will not be able to participate in the housing selection process - there will be no exceptions.

Q.
Should I pay a housing deposit if I plan to study abroad during the 2008-2009 academic year?

A.
Yes, any student currently living in on campus housing and planning to live on campus in the future must place a housing deposit.

Q.
I'm currently studying abroad, do I need to place a housing deposit?

A.
No. Residential Life deferred your current housing deposit to the next academic year when you notified us that you would be studying abroad...and living on campus when you return. Please check your MyKSC email regularly for Housing Selection instructions.
