Calendar The purpose of the Sport Club Program is to provide students an opportunity to participate in an organized team or individual sport program and to enhance their skills in a particular sport. The benefits of sport club participation may include the development of student leadership skills, a team-oriented environment, enhanced physical fitness, development of skills in a particular sport, stress reduction, and friendship. Full-time and part-time matriculated students may join a club; however, students playing on competitive teams must be full-time students. Continuing Education students may not participate on a sport club team even if they are members of the Recreation Center. Sport clubs are governed by the Rec Sports Club Handbook, which outlines policies, rules, and regulations. Any new club must apply to the associate director for recreation for Rec Sports recognition. Clubs are funded through the KSC Student Government. The clubs currently receiving administrative support from Rec Sports are men's rugby, women's rugby, fencing, ice hockey, Brazilian Jui Jitsu and Ultimate Frisbee. The Men's Rugby Club - Recognizing that rugby is not a common sport in the United States, the club gives new members a solid introduction to this fast-paced game. Competitive "A" and "B" sides are fielded in the fall and spring against opponents from a competitive Division III league including Plymouth State, Springfield College, Franklin Pierce University, University of Hartford and Nichols College. Come join a tradition of hard-hitting excellence! To inquire about joining the team and practice times, call the Rugby Club office in the Student Center or contact the Rec Sports Office at 603-358-2814. The Women's Rugby Club - Come join the fastest growing women's sport in the country! Rugby is a centuries old game, which is best described as a combination of soccer and football, but without the pads. We are a fun-loving, highly-motivated group of women, who compete at the Division III level of New England rugby against schools such as Colby-Sawyer College, Mount Holyoke, St. Michael's, Smith College and Middlebury. We are looking for women who like having fun and are willing to try an exciting new sport! No experience is necessary!! We will train everyone, as this is a new sport to most people entering college. For more information, call the Rugby Club office in the Student Center or contact the Rec Sports Office at 603-358-2814. Ice Hockey- The KSC Club Ice Hockey team is in its second year of competitive play. The team is governed by the American Collegiate Hockey Association and is an associate member of the North East Collegiate Hockey Association, playing against teams such as Rhode Island College, Daniel Webster, Lyndon State, Bates, Springfield and Connecticut College among others. The team receives its funding from three sources: the KSC Student Assembly (student Activity fee), substantial fundraising and a member fee from the players themselves. The club also participates in other hockey related activities such as open hockey at the local rink, floor hockey, and hockey trips and instructional and social programs. Membership in the club is open to all KSC students however members must be selected to play on the club team, due to ACHA rules and procedures. The club is also actively seeking female students to form a women's club team. Brazilian Jui Jitsu - The Brazilian Jui Jitsu club focuses heavily on Brazilian Jui Jitsu and basic grappling; sports that have seen a rise in popularity over the past decade or so due to exposure in the media and television. Some other forms of stand-up martial arts will be incorporated as well. It's a great way to learn control, self defense, and stay in shape. The club open to people who are looking to compete in the future. Contact info: Thomas Schoolcraft, tschoolcraft@ksc.mailcruiser.com. Ultimate Frisbee - Frisbee enthusiasts of all skill levels are more than welcome to join this new club. We play fun and friendly Ultimate Frisbee games whenever weather permits, and even sometimes when it does not. Come play with us if you like tossing the Frisbee around, like playing the sport, or just want to learn how to play this up and coming sport. We have a club and a team. The HUCK Ultimate Team started last year and played in one tournament and will play in more tournaments this year. We are definitely looking for new players. The Ultimate Frisbee club is purely for fun and is open to everyone. The team is also open to everyone but is more competitive. There will be weekly practices and weekend tournaments against other colleges. So please contact Jared DiMascio @ jdimascio@ksc.mailcruiser.com if you are interested in joining the club, play on the team, or both, or if you are just interested in knowing more about this awesome sport. |
