Passionate Pursuits Sought for Thorne Gallery Exhibition
KEENE, N.H., 2/24/10 - Keene State College alumni, faculty, staff, and community partner the Friends of the Thorne are invited to share their art, crafts, collectibles, and what they are passionate about in a summer exhibition at the Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery. This exhibit is called Passionate Pursuits: Keene State College Alumni, Faculty, Staff, and Our Community Partner the Friends of the Thorne Share Their Creations and Collectibles. This exhibit will open Friday, June 4 and continue through Sunday, July 25, and will reopen Friday, September 3 through Thursday, Sept. 30. The gallery will close Sunday, July 4, for Independence Day. The Friends of the Thorne will host a public reception on Friday, June 4, from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
"This will be a non-juried exhibit of work that people create and collect, or a visual expression of what they are passionate about," explained Maureen Ahern, director of the Thorne gallery. "We hope to have a reasonably balanced show between the Friends of the Thorne and the College, and within these two constituencies we will accept pieces on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to allow as many participants as possible, we will limit the amount of work that can be accepted."
The show will give participants the opportunity to share their talents and interests with the larger Monadnock community and each other. The exhibit is not meant to promote a business or product, so nothing will be for sale.
This will be the third Passionate Pursuits exhibit. The last exhibit in the summer of 2004 included a bird-carving collection, rock-climbing photos, handcrafted baskets, and hand-colored pictures of swimmers and divers. The first exhibit in the summer of 2002 included baseball memorabilia, a Native American collection, hand-knitted items, wood-turned containers, and an antique penny-farthing bicycle.
The gallery will display as many items as it can. Interested participants are asked to fill out a form online by Monday, April 19, to give the gallery staff an idea of what participants want to exhibit and its size. The form also can be downloaded from the website and returned to the gallery by e-mail or regular mail. To complete or download the intent to exhibit form, visit www.keene.edu/tsag/intent_form.cfm.
Everything must be ready to hang on the wall or display safely in an exhibit case. Contributors will be asked to drop off their exhibit items on Tuesday, May 11, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and pick up their items on Friday, Oct. 1, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Each person who would like to display something in the show must write a paragraph explaining why they are passionate about what they are putting in the exhibit and also explain in a few sentences what the Thorne Gallery means to them and the community. People also may be asked to send digital images of the things they wish to exhibit.
The exhibit will be free and open to the public. For further information about participating in Passionate Pursuits, call Maureen Ahern, 603-358-2721, or Paul Knowlton, 603-358-2240, or visit www.keene.edu/tsag/exhibits.cfm.
