spacer spacer Fun and Learning for Children at Keene State College's Kids on Campus

KEENE, N.H., 06/11/08 - Registration for Kids on Campus, Keene State College's Continuing Education and Extended Studies summer program for first through ninth graders, is open.

Running June 30 to July 3, July 14 to 18, and July 28 to August 1, Kids on Campus combines fun and learning in 38 different classes.

Children have fun exploring the KSC campus while learning about Hawaii, electricity, and messages from space. Wilderness Survival students learn how to collect water from condensation and bake it in a solar oven. In Comedy Magic, seventh through ninth graders practice their improvisation skills and in Passport to Pakistan, young children make kites and fly them on the quad. Children learn anatomy while playing Yoga Bowling in Yoga Games, and act out their favorite stories in Yoga Literature. On the last day of class, children show off their projects and show what they learned in an open house to which parents are invited. Morning classes run from 9 a.m. to noon with afternoon classes from 1 to 4 p.m. Class size is limited to 12 students.

Sessions are taught by teachers from local schools, KSC faculty, and other experts.

Sessions are suggested for first through third graders, fourth through sixth graders, and seventh through ninth graders, but what is more important is the child's interest in the topic. Specific items students need to bring to class, including on the first day, are noted in the course descriptions.

Parents walk students to the classroom and pick them up from that same location. Parents supply snacks and drinks for break time and lunch for students staying a full day. KSC staff meets all-day students after morning class, accompanying them to the lunch area before walking them to afternoon classes. All breaks are supervised.

Per week, the cost per child is $125 for a half day and $200 for a full day for five-day weeks. The cost for the June 30 to July 3 is $100 for a half day and $160 for a full day. Students receive a free T-shirt.

Kids on Campus details and registration are available electronically (www.keene.edu/conted/kids.cfm). Request a brochure from Keene State College, Continuing Education (358-2290) or stop by the office (229 Main Street, Elliot Center, Keene, NH 03435) to pick one up from the information rack outside the office.
