KEENE, N.H. 6/10/05 - Stanley J. Yarosewick, who retires from the presidency at Keene State College on June 30, has left a legacy that originates from his own roots.

A scholarship endowment named for Dr. Yarosewick, whose nickname is "Dr. Y," has been created by the College to give financial assistance to one incoming student each year, with preference for first-generation college students who are enrolled in a science program.

The first recipient of "The Dr. Y Endowed Scholarship" will be Joshua Torrey of North Haverhill, N.H., a senior at Woodsville High School. Torrey was awarded a scholarship of $1,000, which he will use to offset enrollment costs to attend Keene State, where he plans to study biology. In a letter to Dr. Yarosewick, Torrey wrote that as a first-generation, college-bound student he had always been concerned about the cost of a college education.

"Your generosity and that of Keene State College have made it possible for my college dream to come true," Torrey wrote.

Dr. Yarosewick, from Exeter, N.H., was the first person in his family to attend college. He earned his bachelor's degree in science, majoring in physics, from the University of New Hampshire, and his master and doctoral degrees from Clarkson College of Technology. He taught physics at West Chester University in Pennsylvania, then served as the institution's provost and academic vice president and, for a year, as interim president.

Dr. Yarosewick came to Keene State in 1994. Since his arrival, the College has opened a new Student Center, renovated and expanded two major academic buildings, added a 96,000-square-foot Recreation Center, upgraded other athletic facilities, built the Pondside Apartments, and begun construction of a major new dining facility. Dr. Yarosewick also spearheaded the most ambitious construction project in the history of the College, the new $23-million Science Center, which opened last fall.
