Undergraduate Programs

On a typical day, students in our Technology, Design and Safety Studies program simulate a construction site disaster by squeezing through a smoke-filled crawl space. Others work with faculty to identify pollutants from vehicle emissions as part of a region-wide study on the health of construction workers. Others are designing and marketing new products. Keene State's safety studies students received the American Society of Safety Engineers Student Section of the Year Award in 2001, and our graduates take jobs across the country and overseas.

Our education graduates play an important role in addressing a national problem - the growing shortage of teachers. In comfortable Rhodes Hall, students work with education faculty to learn best teaching practices and how to manage a classroom. Students interested in teaching science have their own lab in our new Science Center. All our students are required to teach, under the guidance of veteran teachers, in schools around Keene, and many of our graduates take teaching positions in New Hampshire.

Health is a fast-growing, ever-changing industry. The need for highly trained health professionals increases at the same rate that health problems, such as obesity and drug abuse, spread through society. Our Health Science program introduces students to all aspects of health - nutrition, exercise, chemical dependency, and health and wellness promotion. Students gain firsthand experience of these issues in community and clinical settings. Keene State also offers a one-year dietetic internship program, which provides students with a variety of clinical and management experiences.

Physical Education plays a major role in teaching children to lead healthy, active, lives. Our students work with faculty, as well as mentor teachers in the tri-state area to gain the skills and knowledge necessary teach physical education to children in grades K-12. Upon graduation students meet all current requirements by the State of New Hampshire for certification, and teach throughout the country.

Athletic Training, as an allied health profession, prepares students for athletic training positions in educational, professional sport, military/law enforcement training, performing arts and clinical settings, as well as a number of graduate programs in sports medicine or many other medical fields. Graduates from this nationally accredited program (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education) are eligible to pursue certification as athletic trainers from the Board of Certification and are employed throughout New England and the United States.]
