Important KSC Women

You have tickets for "The F-Word: A Fresh and Funny Look at Feminism." As you climb the stairs to the Mabel Brown Room, you should remember...

Mabel Brown who worked on this campus for thirty-six years as a teacher of history and Greek and Roman literature, as the head of the social science department when it was first formed, as secretary and then administrative assistant to the President of the college, and as Registrar. She was also known for her compassion which took the form of a cigar box in which she kept $50. Students in need of a quick loan for anything from stamps to a medical emergency could always rely on Brown for help.

You need to pick up your workstudy check. As you dart into Fiske Annex on your way to class, you should remember...

Catherine Fiske who founded a school for girls on twenty acres of land in Keene in the early 1800s. Fiske believed in the education of women at a time when such empowerment for women was feared. She created a rigorous curriculum, and in 1824 bought the Bond mansion, now the President's house as a dormitory for her students.

You're on your way to science class. As you scan the Keene Lecture Hall for a seat, you should remember...

Ella O. Keene, staying late in her office, diligently preparing for her geography classes. She was an inspiration to students at Keene State for twenty-five years.

You arrive back at Owl's Nest, also known as Peters. As you settle in for the night, you should remember...

Ann Peters who spent twenty-four years on the Keene State faculty. As a mathematics professor, Peters was famous for her high quality teaching, her administrative skill, and her wise council to deans and presidents.

As you walk the halls, sit in the classrooms, and live in the residence halls on this campus, you should remember the women

  • who helped build this institution
  • who promoted education for women
  • who served as model teachers and administrators
  • who gave us part of the history we celebrate this month.

We on the President's Commission on the Status of Women invite you to join us as we celebrate WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH by attending the Women's History Month Banquet. It's in Mabel Brown's Room.
