Application for Commission Membership, 2004-2005
What is the President's Commission on the Status of Women?
The President's Commission on the Status of Women is an institutional advisory committee consisting
of faculty, staff, and students, appointed by the KSC President, who are committed to improving the
quality of life for women on this campus. Our primary purpose is to monitor the campus climate for
women and to improve this environment by eradicating sexism, challenging stereotypes, and working
for equality, and advise the President on these issues. To achieve these goals we strive to educate
the campus community, to increase awareness of women's issues, and to act as advocates for women.
The PCSW seeks to support and empower women, respect and value their work, celebrate their
accomplishments, provide role models and mentors, and create a supportive campus network. We are
continually vigilant in our efforts to work together to create a campus climate of respect and
equality for all.
Who can become a member?
The Commission consists of 18 active, voting members, six faculty members, six staff members and six
students. Administrators serve in ex officio capacity, as appointed by the President. The faculty
representation is usually balanced among the academic divisions (Sciences, Arts and Humanities,
Professional and Graduate Studies). Staff membership is usually balanced among the campus divisions
(Academic Affairs, Finance and Planning, Student Affairs). Students from a range of majors and
backgrounds are encouraged to join the commission. Members are recruited during the Spring
Semester of the academic year, during Women's History Month (March). The selection of new members
will occur in April and the recommendations are forwarded to the President for review and
appointment. New members will be invited to the Spring Retreat of the Commission (to be held on
Reading Day in May). Faculty and staff members are appointed for two year terms, renewable for up
to two additional years (total of four years). Student members serve for a one year term, renewable
for up to four years.
