Professional Activities

Dr. José Lezcano (Professor of Music) recently completed three performances entitled “Five Hundred Years of Spanish Guitar” at the Clark Institute of Art, in Williamstown, MA, (7/17, 8/7, 8/14) in conjunction with the exhibition, “Nudes from the Prado,” featuring paintings on loan from Madrid. He also organized and performed a benefit concert, raising over $800 for Ecuador Earthquake Relief, with KSC colleagues Dr. Patricia Pedroza and Marcia Lehinger, at the First Baptist Church of Keene (6/24), and presented a lecture-performance at the New Hampshire Humanities Council Fair (6/10), entitled “The Guitar in Spain: Musical Reflections of a Turbulent History,” featuring solo guitar pieces by Mudarra, Pisador, Sanz, Sor, Falla, and Rodrigo, with commentary showing relationships to wars and conflicts including the Reconquista, the Inquisition, the Peninsular Wars, and the Spanish Civil War.

Rodney Obien (Mason Library) attended the Rare Books School hosted in July by the School of Advance Study at the University of London. Obien participated in an intensive seminar focused on the history of book in the ancient world.

Diane Cushing, director of The Keene State College Choir, attended a workshop in July at Gordon College under the leadership of Dr. Anton Armstrong who is the Director of the St. Olaf Choir in Minnesota. His choirs are world-famous, and Diane was selected to conduct a group of singers under his tutelage.
