In late June, Mark C. Long, professor of English and director of the Integrative Studies Program, co-directed the Environmental Literature Institute at Phillips Exeter Academy. The week-long institute that Mark designed with his Exeter colleague Jason BreMiller brought together twenty-five secondary school teachers for an intensive course and curriculum development workshop that included field-based sessions with illustrator and author Clare Walker Leslie, workshops with educators and writers John Elder (Middlebury College) and Scott Russell Sanders (Indiana University), and talks by author and athlete Jennifer Farr Davis and the managing director of Milkweed Editions, Patrick Thomas. The Environmental Literature Institute is an annual event designed to cultivate and sustain an engaged community of secondary school teachers in the environmental humanities.

In July, Matthew Odell, Music, gave a recital in Paris for the European American Music Alliance at the Schola Cantorum. He also received a grant from the Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation to conduct research on the music of Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Boulez, and Michael Tippett in France and England.

Men’s basketball coach Ryan Cain and sports information director Abe Osheyack have been selected to the NCAA Regional Advisory Committees (RAC) for men’s basketball and women’s soccer, respectively. Both will serve terms ending in 2019. The NCAA RAC serves in an advisory role to the sport championship committee, ranking and evaluating teams within the region, and assisting with the evaluation of sites for preliminary rounds. RAC committee members can also potentially serve as site representatives for NCAA Championships, or as alternates to the national committee selection. Cain and Osheyack will represent the Little East Conference on their respective committees.
