Ecuador: Galapagos Academic Institute for the Arts & Sciences (GAIAS),
Universidad San Francisco de Quito
-
Description
- The Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) maintains a specialized semester program in the Galapagos Islands in English for students majoring in the social sciences and sciences. There are several program tracts which are offered, depending upon demand. Each program tack consists of five intensive 3-credti courses taught in three-week modules.
- All program tracks begin at USFQ's main campus in Quito for the first three weeks. While on the mainland, program participants will visit the Tiputini Biodiversity Station (TBS) in the Amazon Basin and USFQ's highland campus in Riobamba. All students participate in a four day cruise through the Galapagos archipelago. In addition to its core courses, GAIAS also offers optional basic Spanish and digital photography courses. GAIAS students are also able to participate in fieldwork, volunteer work/service learning or independent research projects for credit.
- Located 1,000 km off the coast of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands are renowned as one of the prime sites in the world where animals have lost all fear of predators and have developed in unique way. It was here in 1835 that Charles Darwin was inspired to develop his ideas on evolution. There are five inhabited islands with a total population of about 20,000 people.
