Description:
The University of Auckland is a haven from the city's center, but allows students to take full advantage of all that its urban setting has to offer in only a five minute walk. Known also as the “City of Sails,” Auckland occupies a narrow isthmus between two stunning harbors, and is dotted with extinct volcanic cones. Most of these cones are now municipal parks, but many once served as fortified settlements for the various tribes of New Zealand's indigenous people, the Maori. Auckland gives students the opportunity to enjoy a host of outdoor recreational activities all year 'round, including surfing, sailing, hiking and skiing. Vineyards, beautiful swimming and surf beaches, bush-clad hills and the islands of the Hauraki Gulf all are within a 30-minute car or boat ride from the city center.
