KSC Faculty Exhibit Features Three Artists
The exhibit opens Saturday, January 23, and continues through Sunday, February 28, at the Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery on the Keene State campus. The Friends of the Thorne will host an opening reception Friday, January 22, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. One of the Thorne's two galleries will be set aside to showcase works by the three featured artists. McMullan and Richardson, who joined the Art Department in the past three years, will show recent works in ceramics and sculpture, respectively. Roos, who has been teaching at Keene State since 1990, will exhibit recent works in digital photography, a medium he has added to his artistic portfolio since the last faculty exhibit. McMullan lives in Keene and tells stories through his sculpture, which deal with clay as a collage material. He incorporates the use of photo-silkscreen, painting, decals, molds, and various hand-building techniques to achieve an image-packed surface. McMullan, who teaches all levels of sculpture courses at KSC, received a master of fine arts degree from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in Alfred, New York, and a bachelor of fine arts from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He has recently exhibited his art in Portland, Oregon; Sheboygan, Wisconsin; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Richardson lives in Marlborough, N.H., and will exhibit a large sculptural installation that uses sound, motion, light, and the physicality of the piece to engage the viewer in thinking about the conflict between the industrial and natural environment. Richardson, who teaches all levels of sculpture at KSC, received a master of fine arts from the University of Texas-Austin and a bachelor of fine arts from the University of Manitoba. She has presented her sculpture in numerous exhibitions throughout Canada, the United States, and Asia. One major body of her work, titled Inter-Glacial Free Trade Agency, has been exhibited at six art galleries, including locally at the Brattleboro Museum of Art and internationally at the YYZ in Toronto, Ontario. Roos, who lives in Walpole, N.H., will show digital photographs completed over the past two years. His professional work is primarily in the medium of oil painting and explores psychological views of the figure and portraiture. In recent years, he has widened his studio work to include encaustic wax painting and digital photography. He has taken photographs, which he uses to design posters for the KSC Theater and Dance Department and the Apple Hill Chamber Music Ensemble in Sullivan, N.H. Roos has taught painting, drawing, watercolor, senior seminar, and printmaking during the past 19 years at KSC. He received a master and bachelor of fine arts degrees from the Art Institute of Chicago and holds a second bachelor of fine arts from Syracuse University. His work has been exhibited in galleries in Chicago; Terre Haute, Indiana; and in Bedford, Connecticut. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. The Thorne Gallery, located on Wyman Way, is open from noon to 4 p.m., Saturday through Wednesday, and noon to 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday. The gallery is accessible to people with disabilities.
