Guitar Orchestra and Latin Ensemble Spanning the Centuries
KEENE, N.H., 03/15/09 - The KSC Guitar Orchestra and the KSC Latin Ensemble, both under the direction of music faculty member José Lezcano, will perform works spanning the centuries on Wednesday, April 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Alumni Recital Hall of the Redfern Arts Center on Brickyard Pond. Admission is $10 for the general public and $5 for KSC students, senior citizens, and youth ages 17 and younger. For tickets, call the box office at 603-358-2168.

The KSC Guitar Orchestra will perform "Suite" from the sixteenth-century opera Orfeo by Italian Renaissance composer Claudio Monteverdi; "Allegro," a canonic movement from A Suite by seventeenth-century composer George Philipp Telemann; "Intermezzo" from Spain's Enrique Granados' nineteenth-century opera Goyescas; and a classic of the guitar orchestra repertoire, Cuban Landscape with Rain, by twentieth-century Cuban guitarist Leo Brouwer.

A guitar trio (KSC music majors Colin Isotti and Brian Heeran and alumnus and Mt. Caesar Elementary School teacher Michael Dillon) will perform arrangements of Spanish folk songs. KSC student Victoria King will sing composer Violeta Parra's Gracias a la Vida, accompanied by Lezcano. Bob Arpin, a KSC guitar student, will also perform a solo.

The KSC Latin Ensemble will be performing works from Peru, Ecuador, Chile, and Cuba, with panpipes, charangos, guitars, bombos, and conga drums.

Lezcano, a Cuban-born guitarist, composer, educator, and folklorist, has captivated audiences on four continents. His programs of traditional and South American guitar repertory and Andean music and his own solo, concerto, and chamber works have taken him from Carnegie Recital Hall and New York City's North-South Consonance Series to major venues and festivals in Ecuador, Columbia, Peru, Brazil, China, Germany, and the Czech Republic as recitalist, collaborative musician, and concerto soloist. He has been teaching guitar, music theory, and Latin American music at Keene State since 1991.
