Keene State President Anne Huot clapping in our new first-years

Keene State welcomed its incoming class with great enthusiasm this past week! We moved in nearly 1,100 new students with more than 300 of them choosing to live in our recently completed Living Learning Commons. For the second year in a row we invited members of the City of Keene community to join us for our traditional Clap-In, and for the first time, we also encouraged families of our incoming class to participate in this honored tradition and to stay for the New Student Convocation. To say that the atmosphere along Appian Way for the Clap-In was anything but electric would be an understatement! Please take a moment to look at the photo gallery of this year’s Welcome Week on the home page of our website.

As alumni of the College I thought you would be interested in learning more about the exciting opportunities in store for our first-year students. All of these come from our Strategic Plan and all of them are designed to enhance our students’ educational and co-curricular experience at Keene State. This year, we are ensuring that all new students have an advisor. We have adopted five learning outcomes for our students that are relevant to each major and area of study at the College and are fundamental to the liberal arts approach to learning. Our commitment to integrating the educational and co-curricular aspects of our students’ education has resulted in eleven new living and learning communities that span the breadth of our academic majors. And we continue to build a diverse and inclusive community founded on respect and driven by a more intentional plan.

Over the course of the coming year, I will be sharing news like this with our alumni through various communication channels including our Keene State Today magazine, Newsline, video messages, and email. Engaging in this dialog with you is extremely important and I hope that you will continue to find ways to engage with the College as well. Because of the value that I place on this relationship with our alumni and external audiences, I have moved the reporting line for the Advancement Division directly to the president’s office. I look forward to working more closely with this talented group of professionals as we build on the relationships and successes of the past year and focus our attention on innovative programming for the future.

One piece of news that I am anxious to share with you is the announcement of the newest member of the Advancement team who will fill the role of director for engagement of alumni and constituent relations. Sara Barrett is a ninth-generation New Hampshire native who grew up in Keene. Most recently Sara has been employed at Tufts University where she was responsible for their boards of advisors program and academic strategic planning. She brings extensive experience in relationship building and prospect and donor relations. We will welcome Sara on campus on September 12th and I know she is eager to begin her work with you.

Until the next opportunity to share the good news of Keene State College with you, I wish you all the best.

Sincerely,

Anne E. Huot, PhD

President
