New Hampshire Furniture Masters Association Shares Pieces Made with Centuries-Long Traditions

Keene State College’s Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery is showing an exhibit titled Furniture Masters 2015: Our Stories. The exhibit includes a variety of one-of-a-kind pieces made by New Hampshire artisans, including elegant tables, desks, chairs and more, made from wood such as mahogany, ebony and Honduran rosewood, and other materials such as bone and hemp.

“Our gallery visitors are in for an amazing experience – the furniture pieces that will be displayed are truly unique and exquisite. We are very pleased to feature the work of our state’s furniture masters, and highlight the tradition of artisan furniture making,” said director of Keene State College’s Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery, Maureen Ahern.

The New Hampshire Furniture Masters Association was founded in 1995 as a means of continuing the state’s legacy of fine furniture making. Its members are committed to maintaining their craft as a full-time profession by generating public awareness of their works and cultivating an audience for their creations. The Masters hail from across New Hampshire as well as from Massachusetts, Maine, and Vermont and create studio furniture in an array of styles including Period, Early American, Shaker, Neo-Classical, Traditional, Contemporary and Art Furniture.

“The New Hampshire Furniture Masters are very happy to be exhibiting our work at the Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery this summer,” notes Rindge, New Hampshire-based Master William Thomas. “This show offers us a wonderful opportunity to present our work for the first time in this part of New Hampshire, and the fact that this is the Gallery’s 50th anniversary makes this exhibition especially exciting.”
