Meta Marches: A Concert of Marches About Marches

The Keene State College Concert Band and a special guest ensemble, The Newmont Military Band, will perform Meta Marches: A Concert of Marches About Marches at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 19, in the Mabel Brown Room of the Lloyd P. Young Student Center.

The Newmont Military Band is a re-creation of a small-town brass band of the 1890s. The brass instruments that the NMB musicians play were either manufactured prior to, or based on, designs drawn before 1895. They are more mellow than many of today’s brass instruments, and they require a different level of skill to produce the sound so indicative of the old-time bands. Audience members will have the opportunity to compare the sounds of today’s concert band with those of a band from over 100 years ago. The concert will include Sousa’s “The Liberty Bell,” Keene resident E.E. Bagley’s “National Emblem,” and Henry Fillmore’s “American’s We.” The concert also includes “MetaMarch,” a contemporary composition by Steven Bryant that uses these three marches as source material. The resulting composition sounds a bit like a new march containing the shadows of marches from long ago.

Tickets are $10 for the general public and $5 for kids under 17, senior citizens and KSC students. Contact the Redfern Arts Center box office at 603-358-2168 or online to reserve your tickets.
