Decolonial Perspectives: Understanding Shifts in Flamenco Dance
Niurca E. Marquez will talk about her primary vision behind her work which is based on Contemporary Flamenco but is constantly informed by collaborations with other artists of various disciplines and other dance styles. Marquez writes that "If culture is, in the words of Ana Mendieta, 'the memory of history', then dance becomes a way to embody that history’s essence. Marquez believes that innovation is the product of tradition. "Drawing from a tradition adds depth and context, but as an artist I feel obligated to take the process a step further and question the implications of our search for true dialogue in contemporary society."
