Musical performance Owen Ó Súilleabháin

Young Student Center - Mabel Brown room
Wednesday, · -

Throughout an evening performance of song, poetry and reflection, we will open a space to allow ourselves the right to rearticulate our inheritance. The Ancient Greeks called it catharsis, and they had a deep philosophical understanding of the magic that happens when we gather in public to hear a song sung or a story told. Inspired by artistic expression against which we have no defenses, we will rekindle the compassion that is the hallway of justice.

Owen Ó Súilleabháin comes from a family immersed in traditional and world arts in the West of Ireland. He is a singer, composer, and teacher, who believes in the power of performance and listening to awaken our most dynamic and creative forms into being. Owen has performed in more than a dozen countries and collaborated with Riverdance composer Bill Whelan, violinist Nigel Kennedy, actor Russell Crowe, director Steven Spielberg, and Irish traditional music legends The Chieftains. Owen has worked with two of his mentors, poet David Whyte and philosopher John O’Donohue. Drawing on a musical tradition inherited from his parents, Owen has released eight albums of ancient and contemporary song.

Now based in the United States, Owen works with clients in some of today’s most challenged industries, from education to healthcare to the corporate world. He has composed songs for the Storytelling Project at Stanford University. He has worked on the role of listening in healing and transformation for the Natividad Medical Foundation in Monterey County. He has performed at the Center for Professional Excellence at the University of Texas San Antonio and Bad Robot Studios in Hollywood.
