Cherrie Moraga Playwright, Poet, Scholar and Essayist

Cherríe L. Moraga is a playwright, poet, and essayist whose plays and publications have received national recognition, including most recently Yale University’s James Brudner Prize for 2013. Other awards include: National Endowment for the Arts Playwrights’ Fellowship, two Fund for New American Plays Awards, the Pen West Award for Drama, the American Studies Association Lifetime Achievement Award, the National Association of Chicana and Chicano Studie...s Scholar Award, the National Association of Latino/ Arts and Culture Master Artist Award and more. In 2007, she won the United States Artist Rockefeller Fellowship for Literature.

For more than fifteen years, Moraga has served as Artist in Residence at Stanford in the Department of Theater and Performance Studies, sharing an appointment with the Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity & The Institute for Diversity in the Arts Programs. She is a founding & an active member of La Red Xicana Indígena, an advocacy network of Xicanas working in education, the arts, and international organizing. A queer mother and “abuelita,” she calls Oakland, California, home.
