As one of the great Czech nationalist composers of the late-nineteenth century, Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) helped to bring significant attention to Czech music with his symphonies, chamber music, songs, choral music, and operas. Dvorak’s Stabat Mater, composed in 1876-77, is the composer’s interpretation of the Roman Catholic sequence depicting the mourning of Mary at the crucifixion of Jesus. The work was composed as a grief-stricken response to the deaths of three of Dvorak’s children, bringing together beautiful vocal solos and duets, passionate writing for the chorus, and striking music for the orchestra. At the time of its composition, Dvorak was establishing his reputation among the leading musicians of Vienna as one of Europe’s most promising talents. The inclusion of his Stabat Mater in a portfolio of works submitted to conductors and music publishers brought Dvorak a level of international fame that had been unprecedented for Czech music and musicians. By the 1890s, Dvorak was one of the most admired composers in the world, and in demand as a composer and teacher throughout Europe and in the U.S.
