Saxophone and Brass Ensembles
The KSC Saxophone Ensemble presents "The Romantic Saxophone" - a concert of works from the Romantic Era. The program includes two very early quartets, Quartette by Caryl Florio and Grand Quatuor Concertant by Jean-Baptiste Singelée. Florio’s work, composed in 1879, is believed to be the first American piece written for saxophone quartet. Grand Quatuor Concertant, composed in 1861, is one of a number of works that Singelée wrote for his friend Adolphe Sax while Sax was the saxophone instructor at the Paris Conservatory. The program also includes works by Mendelssohn, Fauré, Grieg, and a stirring arrangement of the traditional song, “The Turtle Dove,” which tells the romantic tale of a young maiden who is asked to wait for her beloved while he travels to far aways lands.
