Historical Society of Cheshire County, 246 Main Street
Wednesday, · -

Lowell and Lawrence, Mass. erupted into a dramatic struggle between mill owners and workers from Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Syria, Lebanon and Turkey over the 8 hour work day.

As a PhD historian and former machinist, Dr. Forrant explores the industrial history of New England. He has written Metal Fatigue: American Bosch and the Demise of Metalworking in the Connecticut River Valley (2009). Dr. Forrant has also researched extensively on the Bread and Roses strike of textile workers in Lowell and Lawrence. The immigrant men and women arranged safe haven for their children in New York City and set out to face the police to fight for the 8 hour day in 1912. He is the co-author with Susan Grabski of Lawrence and the 1912 Bread and Roses Strike, and also editor with Jurg Siegenthaler of The Great Lawrence Textile Strike of 1912 (2014).
