We also collect and preserve rare and unique books, papers, and manuscripts that support the curriculum of the college and fosters undergraduate research. To date, the holdings of the archives & special collections consist of over 250 linear feet of archival and manuscript material and over 6,000 volumes of print and bound materials, covering predominantly the disciplines of history, literature, poetry, film studies, Holocaust studies, and anthropology. Some of featured holdings include: College Archives, Modern Poetry Collection, New Hampshire Social Justice Collection, Mondanock Women’s History Collection, and the Orang Asli Archives. Our holdings continue to grow as does interest in using them. We encourage you to browse through our website or visit us in Keene, New Hampshire.
Interlibrary Loan
Introduction:
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service offered by Mason Library to support the research and educational needs of the Keene State College community by providing access to supplemental resources that are not available at Mason Library, Keene Public Library, or in full-text periodical databases subscribed to by the College. Through our participation in OCLC (Online Computer Library Center, a global library cooperative), and the New Hampshire State Library's NHAIS (New Hampshire Automated Information System) we can share our resources and borrow materials from virtually anywhere.

Design Effective Research Assignments
Emphasize the PROCESS!
Challenges with asking for “peer reviewed” or “academic sources”
· Many students don’t know what “peer-review” means.
· The meaning of “academic sources” can vary from one professor, or even one assignment, to the next.
· Many students have trouble identifying peer-reviewed scholarly sources when they find them. Even if you believe they “should already know this” often students are challenged when put to the task.
· Banning the use of materials found “online” or “from websites” in an effort to have students find more scholarly information does not help students learn how to search for, identify, access, and use scholarly materials.
Possible Solutions:
· Design an exercise that helps students to learn what “peer-review” means prior to requiring the use of these materials. Your subject liaison librarian can help you do this.
· Design an exercise where students learn to identify scholarly sources from popular sources from other types of sources. Your subject liaison librarian can help you do this.
· Define what you mean by “academic sources.” If not required to be peer-reviewed, are blogs written by individuals with appropriate credentials acceptable? What about trade journal articles?
· Hold students accountable, through assessment, for using the type of sources you ask for. Otherwise, why should they bother?
· Recognize that all information found in databases is not scholarly, peer reviewed material. Help students to recognize this as well by designing lessons where they interact with a variety of materials and apply skills to evaluate information. Your subject liaison librarian can help you do this.
· Design assignments and lessons where students learn how to more accurately search for information on the web, and apply criteria to evaluate the information they find. Your subject liaison librarian can help you do this.
Avoid Copyright Infringement
What Faculty Can DO to Avoid Copyright Infringement
For articles:
· Link to the article in your blackboard course
· The article might be on the web
· Search for it in the library databases and get the permanent link (“permalink”) for the article. Provide that link in Blackboard to link to the article. If you can’t locate the article, double check with your librarian liaison.
![]() |
· If the library does not own a copy, place a copy of the article on reserve in the library. Students would have to come in and use the copy. They could make a copy for themselves.
· You can have the article on reserve for one semester (it is o.k. to have multiple copies on reserve- 1 copy per 20-25 students is suggested). After one semester, if you want the article to remain on reserve, the library will get copyright clearance for you. See the Course Reserves Policy
For sections of books:
· If you have photocopies of sections of a book you can place it on reserve in the library. It can only be a small portion of the book (not a majority). If it needs to be a larger portion of the book, place a copy of the book itself on reserve at the library. If the library does not own a copy of the book, ask your liaison to purchase a copy for the library to own. See the Course Reserves Policy http://www.keene.edu/library/policies/reserves.cfm
