Keene Normal School Series I
The Planning Years:
1906 - 1909

Keene Normal School (KNS) Digital Archives consists of published and unpublished archival materials that chronicle the history of Keene Normal School from 1909 to 1920. Founded originally in 1909 as a teacher's college, KNS would later become Keene State College in 1963 -- focusing on undergraduate liberal art education.

The Keene Normal School was brought into legislation over three years prior to the opening ceremony in 1909. Superintendent of Schools reports in 1906 state the demand for more teachers' colleges in New Hampshire. Through the arrangements of land and staff, the school was opened with three years of planning in 1909. The first commencement ceremony was held in 1910.

This online collection includes the text of reports of Superintendent of Public Instruction Henry C. Morrison, expressing the need for a normal school in southern New Hampshire and then reporting on its progress over a decade; the opening ceremonies, presided over by Principal Jeremiah M. Rhodes; the laws and contracts which made the school a reality; and other printed materials and ceremonies.
