Biographical Sketch:
Phyllis Reynolds Naylor graduated from Joliet Junior College in
1953 and received her B.A. from American University in 1963. She began
her career as an elementary school teacher in 1956 and was assistant
executive secretary for the Montgomery County Education Association,
Rockville, MD from 1958-1959. She was also editorial assistant with
the NEA Journal from 1959-1960 before becoming a full time writer in
1960. Naylor has won numerous awards for her work, including the
Newbery Award for Shiloh, and is the author of the popular Alice
series and many other books for children and young
adults. Walker's Crossing was her 100th book published.
Scope and Content Note:
The papers document the author's work in
writing Walker's Crossing and include research notes,
news clippings and correspondence with editors, friends and
associates. Drafts of the book, publisher's galleys, an advanced
reader's copy, and an inscribed copy are also found in the
collection. The fourth draft (folder 7) and draft 4.7 (folder 11)
include Chuck Reed's (BLM, Wyoming) corrections as a reader.
The author was a presenter at the Children's Literature Festival
at Keene State College.
