Biographical Sketch:
Robert M. McClung attended Princeton University and graduated in
1939 with a degree in biology. In 1948 he received a graduate
degree in zoology from Cornell University. McClung worked at the
Bronx Zoo and later at the National Geographic Society (1958-1962),
which he left to devote himself to his writing. He has written
more than 60 books for children on the subject of wild animals and
the natural environment. McClung has received a number of awards for
his work including the Eva L. Gordon Award, the American Library
Association (ALA) notable book citation, and many National Science
Teachers Association outstanding science books for children citations.
Scope and Content Note:
The collection documents McClung's authorship of The Amazing
Egg between 1979 and 1980 and Rajpur, Last of the Bengal Tigers
in 1982 and the editorial work on the manuscripts. The collection
includes edited manuscripts, galleys, illustrations and
correspondence. Two illustrations from The Amazing Egg, received
with the collection, were transferred to the Children's Literature
Festival Gallery Collection. McClung was a speaker at the
Children's Literature Festival at Keene State College.
