Biographical Sketch:
Eric A. Kimmel received his Ph.D. in 1973 from the University of
Illinois. He was an assistant professor of Education at Indiana
University from 1973-1978 and Professor of Education at Portland
State University from 1978-1994. He has been a full-time writer
since 1994. He received the Present Tense-Joel A. Cavior Award for
Notable Children's Book, National Council of Teachers of English
in 1990 for Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins, which was
also a Caldecott Honor Book, as well as numerous
other awards for his work.
Scope and Content Note:
The collection documents the writing of a children's author for two
books: Hershel and the Hanukah Goblins and The McElderry Book of Greek
Myths. Series 1 consists of the original manuscript for
Hershel and the Hanukah Goblins. The story, originally
titled Hershel and the Chanukah Demons, was later shortened,
renamed and published in the December 1985 issue of the
Cricket before being published as a picture book in 1989. Series
2 consists of the copyedited typed manuscript of The McElderry Book of Greek Myths.
Each series also includes incoming and outgoing correspondence.
