Two Estate Gifts Boost Scholarship Funds by a Cool Million

There's nothing like the element of surprise - especially when the surprise comes in the form of two bequests that will make a real difference to deserving Keene State students.

Last year, KSC received two unexpected gifts: one from emeritus faculty Peter Batchelder, who taught German here until 1981, and one from Dorothea Kitlan '72, who worked on campus from the late 1960s to the mid '80s and received her BA as a nontraditional student here in 1972.

Professor Batchelder, who died in 2007, lived in Alstead Center, NH, and had supported the arts at KSC with his previous gifts. His recent estate bequest has established the Peter H. Batchelder Scholarship for the Humanities, which provides recognition and financial assistance, awarded annually for a maximum two-year period, to a Keene State College student enrolled in the School of Arts and Humanities, with preference given to students majoring in French, German, or philosophy.

Kitlan Scholarship Fund for students with financial need. Ms. Kitlan, who died in 2009, had been living in Port Charlotte, FL, and, back in the 1970s, had been a board member for the Keene Endowment Association, an independent charitable entity established to provide assistance to deserving KSC students. When she retired from Keene State, she was the director of the Curriculum Materials Library at the Mason Library.

We are delighted to receive these two special gifts. They will provide critical support for deserving students (always a wonderful thing), and we're honored to know that two people who have been closely involved with the work we do here remembered KSC so fondly and were so committed to support that important work.

For information about making a bequest to the College, or other bequest intentions, please contact Ken Goebel, director of development, at kgoebel@keene.edu or 603-358-2378.

Several former Owl basketball players (with their families) held a mini reunion at the Keene State game against UMass Dartmouth on January 15, filling a couple of rows on the bleachers to take in the action.

The get-together was the idea of Megan Jalbert Kivela '00, who was a four-year player for the Owls.

"Once a year, I try to get my teammates together at a game," she said. "It's fun to see each other's families and see how the kids have grown."

Other alums at the game included Kerrie Raymond Moynihan '00, Judy Izzo Tilden '99, Margot Fleming Van Netta '01, Erika Forsberg Sheppard '02, Sarah Linn '02, and Janell Burley Hofmann '99. They all agreed it would be an annual event.
