Upright English Oaks
A newly planted line of trees will create a prominent landscape feature on the Keene State campus. Several upright English oaks (Quercus robur "fastigiata") will line the north-south pedestrian walkway by the new Spaulding Gym Recreation Center. In time they will form a vertical alley from the Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery to the Student Center. The trees may grow to 50 or 60 feet but will only be 10 or 15 feet wide when fully mature. The lobed leaves don't have outstanding fall color but are a deep green throughout the summer. The species is native to Europe, where it is widely planted on larger properties.
With assistance from Bud Winsor, assistant director of grounds, we introduce a specimen from the Arboretum and Gardens of Keene State College in each issue of Keene State Today. Some of these plantings are Memorial/Recognition Trees, which have been purchased and maintained with funds from alumni and friends.

Where in the World
Way down south- With her alumni magazine in haned, Barbara Brown Charbonneau '43 stands aboard the Celebrity as it rounds the Horn of South America in January 2002. Her trip started in Santiago, Chile, and ended in Buenos Aries, Argentina. "Most of the people live along the coast in a few small cities. Much of the area is quite desolate," she reports, "inhabited by sheep, horses, and penguins. The weather went from very cold to quite warm, as it was summer."
Bonn vivant- Carol L. Jeffery '65 shows off her magazine near the post office at Cathedral Square in Bonn, Germany, in October 2001. Her travels last year also took her to Reyjavik, Iceland.
In Greece- Lynne Edwards '66, who usually can be found at 5 Springbrook Streek in Hinsdale, N.H., is seen here with her Keene State Today at the National Palace in Athens, Greece.
All in the family - A family Caribbean vacation brought these alums together to share their magazines on the deck of their cruise ship in the port of St. Maarten. Trisha Hartwell Gagnon '95 sent this photo of the KSC graduates in her family - from left, Roger Hartwell '72, Janice Hartwell Sable '57, Steven Gagnon '93, Trisha, and Sarah Gagnon '97.
